Graphic Design

After taking a design class I learned some basics of  design as well as how to use Adobe InDesign and Illustrator. Here are some of my projects from class and others I did on my own.

Type as Image

In this creative project we were tasked with turning type into an image by converting the text to outlines and warping or recoloring the letters and words to match a selected image in Adobe Illustrator.

I opted to use one of my favorite paintings by John Waterhouse, The Soul of the Rose, as the image. The text is a poem by Lord Alfred Tennyson who was inspired by this Waterhouse painting to write the lengthy sonnet.

Below is the poem in full:

Come into the garden, Maud,

      For the black bat, night, has flown,

Come into the garden, Maud,

      I am here at the gate alone;

And the woodbine spices are wafted abroad,

      And the musk of the rose is blown.

   For a breeze of morning moves,

      And the planet of Love is on high,

Beginning to faint in the light that she loves

      In a bed of daffodil sky,

To faint in the light of the sun she loves,

      To faint in his light, and to die.

   All night have the roses heard

      The flute, violin, bassoon;

All night has the casement jessamine stirr'd

      To the dancers dancing in tune;

Till a silence fell with the waking bird,

      And a hush with the setting moon.

   I said to the lily, "There is but one

      With whom she has heart to be gay.

When will the dancers leave her alone?

      She is weary of dance and play."

Now half to the setting moon are gone,

      And half to the rising day;

Low on the sand and loud on the stone

      The last wheel echoes away.

   I said to the rose, "The brief night goes

      In babble and revel and wine.

O young lord-lover, what sighs are those,

      For one that will never be thine?

But mine, but mine," so I sware to the rose,

      "For ever and ever, mine."

   And the soul of the rose went into my blood,

      As the music clash'd in the hall;

And long by the garden lake I stood,

      For I heard your rivulet fall

From the lake to the meadow and on to the wood,

      Our wood, that is dearer than all;

   From the meadow your walks have left so sweet

      That whenever a March-wind sighs

He sets the jewel-print of your feet

      In violets blue as your eyes,

To the woody hollows in which we meet

      And the valleys of Paradise.

   The slender acacia would not shake

      One long milk-bloom on the tree;

The white lake-blossom fell into the lake

      As the pimpernel dozed on the lea;

But the rose was awake all night for your sake,

      Knowing your promise to me;

The lilies and roses were all awake,

      They sigh'd for the dawn and thee.

   Queen rose of the rosebud garden of girls,

      Come hither, the dances are done,

In gloss of satin and glimmer of pearls,

      Queen lily and rose in one;

Shine out, little head, sunning over with curls,

      To the flowers, and be their sun.

   There has fallen a splendid tear

      From the passion-flower at the gate.

She is coming, my dove, my dear;

      She is coming, my life, my fate;

The red rose cries, "She is near, she is near;"

      And the white rose weeps, "She is late;"

The larkspur listens, "I hear, I hear;"

      And the lily whispers, "I wait."

   She is coming, my own, my sweet;

      Were it ever so airy a tread,

My heart would hear her and beat,

      Were it earth in an earthy bed;

My dust would hear her and beat,

      Had I lain for a century dead,

Would start and tremble under her feet,

      And blossom in purple and red.

Armour_Type Anatomy.jpg

Type Anatomy

This is a study of type anatomy. These are the parts of type studied in our Typography class. Our own names were used for this project and I decided to use my full name, Elisabeth, so that I would have more text to work with.

Armour_Letterform.jpg

Letterform Design

The object of this design was to take a classic or well known typeface and transform it into an abstract design within a four by four square grid. This floral motif reflects the complementary, structured and organic nature of the Times New Roman font in this classic design.

Impressionist Playing Cards.jpg

This assignment was to redesign the face cards and backs of a standard card deck according to a theme. I chose to design face card for my favorite impressionist artists. The hearts are themed after Monet, the spades after Renoir, diamonds after Van Gogh, and clubs after Degas. The jokers are Picasso and Gauguin.

The Hardwood Mall, Emlenton PA

An original T-shirt design for the business I worked with summer 2023. The Hardwood Mall wanted new shirts for its employees to be more easily identified with the business. The design depicts the center of the main warehouse at the Hardwood Mall distinguished by the timber frame doorway. In the background are the rolling forest hills of midwestern Pennsylvania. In the distance, the Hardwood Mall delivery truck drives across the Emlenton Bridge, an iconic landmark of the area.

T-Shirt Design

My senior year of Highschool I had the opportunity to design a T-shirt for my volleyball team.

Here is the sketch and the final product.

Timberwolves

Square Project

Our first project for class was to use Points, Lines, and Planes to show Hierarchy through Interval, Alignment, Texture, and Scale. This project was very abstract  for a beginner of design but looking back now, with a better comprehension of Hierarchy, I understand the project much more.

Page Project

In our next project for class we created three coffee book page designs about these three famous designers. We were given content to be included on each page and we were to arrange the information on each page,

creating clear hierarchy. This was our introduction to typography and I learned a lot about different functions in InDesign as well as how to activate white space.

POSTER

PROJECT

Our final project was to design a poster for an upcoming lecture series put on by Grove City College. Again, we were given all the information to include on the poster but the goal was to make a poster that was eye-catching and had a clear hierarchy.

As with any Design project, this poster went through many iterations before it was turned in. at the beginning of the year our professor told us, "Design is never finished; it is only done because of the due date". I believe this is true of things outside of design as well.
